Chaco Jaguar Conservation Project. PARAGUAY

Volunteer needed to assist with sign survey for jaguar conservation project in the Paraguayan Chaco. Surveys will take place in and around Chaco Defensores National Park starting October 20-24 and last for 2 weeks. The goals of the project include: (1) evaluating the threat to jaguars in the region, (2) estimating jaguar population size and sex ratio, and (3) determining regional population structure and dispersal for cats in the region.
A Bachelor’s of Science in biology, natural resources management, wildlife biology, or a related field is preferred. Experience conducting surveys for large mammal sign and a conversational knowledge of Spanish is a plus, but not absolutely necessary. The field site is extremely remote and conditions can be difficult, so field durability is a must. Long hours are the rule, so long as daily conditions permit. Volunteers are responsible for their own international travel and visa arrangements and are required to contribute $1000 to help defer in-country project costs. All in-country logistics will be arranged by the project’s field coordinator.

Chaco Defensores National Park is a true wilderness area. It is remote, nearly impenetrable, and represents a significant portion of a unique, endangered semi-arid thorn forest ecoregion called the Chaco. Extensive daily travel in this region will afford you an unparalleled opportunity of seeing not only many elusive South American wildlife species, but even the jaguar itself.

This is a unique chance to participate in an important conservation project, as well as develop important field skills for a career in conservation and wildlife research. Moreover, it is a rare opportunity to gain valuable experience working internationally. To apply, please send your resume to: species01@gmail.com, or email for additional information.

Bird Banding. ECUADOR

Job Type: volunteer position

Opportunity location: Loma Alta - coastal mountains - Ecuador - 3 hr N of Guayaquil

Closing date (if specified): 20 Nov 2010

Opportunity Description:

Bird Banding, Survey, and Community-based Conservation Volunteers
Ecuador Cloud Forest Bird Expedition
Loma Alta, Ecuador, South America
December 5-19, 2010

Life Net Ecuador's Expedition needs volunteers to help with mist-netting, bird banding, bird surveys, and community outreach at Loma Alta, Ecuador. Dr. Dusti Becker, a conservation biologist with more than 15 years experience in Ecuador, will lead the expedition. Volunteers help collect data about birds in the Loma Alta Important Bird Area (IBA). The project goals include comparing lowland and cloud forest bird communities, providing hands-on training in ecotourism for local citizens, and delivering information about biodiversity value of the Loma Alta watershed to community members including school children. The volunteer contribution of $1500 to Life Net is tax deductible. This is a great project to get solid experience with mist-netting and bird banding. We train volunteers, but experience with mist-netting is desirable.

Loma Alta is home to more than 20 species of hummingbirds and 48 of the 55 Tumbesian endemic birds making it a HOT birding spot. In 2004, our research findings lead BirdLife International to designate the Loma Alta watershed as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Red-masked Parakeets, Crested Guan, Rufous-fronted Chachalaca, Choco Toucan, Gray-backed Hawk, and Ornate Hawk Eagle are regional specialties. The reserve also harbors the critically endangered Esmeraldas Woodstar, an additional focus of our monitoring project.

Volunteers help set up and monitor mist nets, extract birds from nets, carry birds from nets to a banding station, and record basic ecological data. Bilingual volunteers may contribute to environmental education and ecotourism training Loma Alta. Volunteers will have some afternoons free to explore and bird around the protected area, including searching for Mantled Howlers and White-fronted Capuchin Monkeys. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to play a leadership role in the annual Conteo Navidad (Christmas Bird Count). Loma Alta is an official Audubon count circle.

Volunteer contribution covers transportation within Ecuador, lodging during the project, and meals during the project, and all fees associated with reserve entry, research permit, and Conteo Navidad. The expedition begins and ends in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with the team meeting on the morning of 5 December, 2010 and returning to the city late afternoon of 19 December.

Integrated modelling of land-use changes at rainforest margins - INDONESIA

Job Type: part-time temporary position

Opportunity location: involves travelling to Indonesia

Closing date (if specified): No date specified (will remain here for 90 days from posting date)

Opportunity Description:

Two positions in ecological and economic modelling (Postdoc and PhD)

Starting date
As soon as possible.

Rationale
The project will investigate the ecological and socio-economic trade-offs at the rainforest margin under land-use change. Previous insights (e.g., Steffan-Dewenter et al. 2007 ) will be extended using dynamic modelling techniques. Based on a large and long-term data set, ecological and socio-economic model components will be developed from scratch that simulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use (rainforest, agriculture) and individual households. Combined model analyses will investigate trade-offs in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and household income.
One position will focus on the development and analysis of ecological models (grid-based and agent based models) while the other will focus on economic modelling (microeconometric models, calibrated agricultural household models). Either position can be filled by a postdoc or a PhD, depending on experience and integrative abilities. The postdoc will be responsible for the integration of ecological and economic model components.

Requirements
Successful applicants hold a master degree in Ecological Sciences, Plant Sciences, Economic Sciences, Applied Mathematics or a related field, with sound experience in simulation modelling and with the work in interdisciplinary teams. The project will be based in Göttingen, Germany, but will involve travelling to Indonesia.

Salary and conditions
The positions will be awarded for at least 18 months, with a possible extension of up to three years. RESEARCH FIELD ASSITANT (RFA), OSA PENINSULA, COSTA RICA

Contact: Guido Saborio guidosaborio@osaconservation.org
WWW Link: http://www.osaconservation.org/Volunteer.html

Period
September-December

Location
Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Background Information
Friends of the Osa is a non-profit organization with a goal to preserve the Osa Peninsula’s globally significant biodiversity through research, conservation and education. Our Sea Turtle Conservation Program at Piro Beach has been in operation for more than 4 years, conserving and collecting scientific data of sea turtles nesting on this beach. There are two main species that visit our research site: the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivaceae) and the Pacific Green Turtle or Black Turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii). The Osa Peninsula, with 50% of Costa Rican species and the highest number of endemic species in the country, is an undeveloped paradise to enjoy solitary beaches and a stunning tropical forest.

Duties
The Research Field Assistants will be working with our Field Coordinator, a local person with more than 6 years of experience working with sea turtles on the Osa Peninsula. Night and early morning patrols are conducted on the beach as well as scientific data collection (number of turtles visiting the beach, following up nest history, turtle morphology, physical and chemical characteristics of the beach, along with other information useful in conservation work). The work requires lengthy walks on the beach and working almost all night long, depending on sea turtle activity. Also, the RFAs will be participating in educational activities and training and coordinating the work with volunteers. This season we are planning to have four people permanently on the beach: one field coordinator, and three research field assistants including a local person. This team will have the help of volunteers through our Environmental Educational and Volunteer Program.

Requirements
1. Demonstrable experience working with sea turtles projects or vast experience working in scientific data collection projects with others taxonomy groups.
2. Conversational Spanish. Basic Spanish is required since the RFAs will be working with local people.
3. Be in good physical and medical condition (No severe eyesight problems or severe allergies to mosquito and sand flies bites).
4. Be willing to work hard in challenging conditions.
5. Have a personal insurance policy.
6. Be prepared to experience working in a remote place in the tropics

Benefits/Costs
Research Field Assistantship (RFA) positions are voluntary and selected RFAs are expected to plan and finance their own travel to and from the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.
Selected RFAs will receive food and board for the duration of their time working in the project. Travel between Piro Beach and Puerto Jiménez, the nearest town, will not be covered for the RFAs, unless it is part of an activity related with the project.
